Djanogly Community Orchestra

logo_smallThe Djanogly Community Orchestra is a friendly amateur orchestra based in Nottingham. We rehearse on Monday evenings, and usually perform three concerts per year.

Our music is varied – including symphonies, shorter pieces for orchestra, children’s concerts, works in conjunction with a local choir, and concertos (frequently using local young musicians – which we particularly enjoy and  provides inspiration to us all). Our latest concert ‘European Romantic Masterpieces’

Our spring concert on 17th March 2018 was a great success, and despite the unseasonal driving snow we had a big audience . The first half started with the Overture to Prince Igor and the Polovtsian Dances by Borodin and ended with Wagner’s Maestersingers Orchestral Suite. After the interval we had an excellent rendition of Schuman’s Piano Concerto in A minor with Konya Kanneh-Mason on the piano.    Pictures from this  (and previous concerts) can be found on our Achievements page

Our Conductor

Dan Watson is our Conductor, and joined the orchestra in 2017. He shares some of the planning with the committee and works closely with Stephen, the leader, to come up with interesting and enjoyable concert repertoire for the orchestra to take on.

Aside from his position in this orchestra, Dan works with other orchestras across the Midlands and plays the saxophone too.
Away from music he can often be found in his shed making model steam engines, or spending time with his wife (Sally), and daughter (Bethan), who was born in December 2017.

Interested in joining the orchestra?

As a large amateur orchestra we often need additional players – either because a current member leaves or is away for a specific concert, or where additional players or ‘unusual’ instruments (e.g. Bass Clarinet, Harp, extra percussion, etc) are needed for a piece.  To join you need to be a competent player at least at grade 5 or equivalent. Additionally, the orchestra needs to have a role for your instrument. We currently have vacancies for :

  • Violins
  • Violas
  • Double Basses

Even if we don’t currently have a vacancy for your instrument – if you are interested do contact us (by emailing  us Membership@djanoglycommunityorchestra.co.uk)   so we can note your details for when an opportunity arises.

We do not have auditions.  Instead we will invite a prospective member to come to rehearsals for up to 4 weeks and try playing with us. That allows the player to decide if they like the orchestra, and allows us to decide whether joining at that time is appropriate or should be deferred until the player has improved.
